And the award goes to…Dennis Rodman!?! That’s right I said it…Well, I’m quoting one of the best coaches of all time! It all took place during a speech at the University of North Dakota. Of all that was said and talked about, the only thing that I could possibly be dumbfounded by was his choice of greatest athlete that he ever coached! “[Rodman] could probably play a 48-minute game and play the 48th minute stronger than the first minute of the game. He was that terrific of an athlete!”
Shocked at first, but Phil made a huge point…ATHLETE? hmmmm
Not best at the sport, not fastest, not best shooter, but ATHLETE! Best all around, someone who gives it their all…day in and day out. Team player, hard-worker, leaves it all out on the court.
Then yes, I fully agree with Phil Jackson! That’s Rodman to me! Weird off the court (extremely), and sometimes on, never seized to amaze and a huge crowd entertainer, but I remember he gave it all every game. Not just with the Bulls and his rings, but with the Spurs, Pistons, and Lakers as well. My brother was a huge Rodman fan, and when we played pick-up, he was always hollering “Board Rodman” and throwing bows…But it got the job done. Never new what the next day was in store for this “special” character, but Dennis Rodman got the job done! Like him or hate him, he’s got the verbal award from the original “Dr. Phil”, GREATEST ATHLETE (Coached by Phil)!!!
